Tourists still like to try their hand at gold panning on the South Fork of the American. |
Finally, a little time to get caught up on the tour journal. Wednesday 10/23 was one of those uneventul but necessary days in a tour--bookkeeping, bank and post office trips, and returning some phone calls before heading North for Thursday's show in Nevada City. Our only deadline before the show was a radio appearance right around the corner from the venue at KVMR 89.5 FM, a stellar and powerful community radio station now familiar from our last swing through this part of CA. With so much of the day free to relax, we did a bit of exploring the region where gold was first discovered in the 1840's--Placerville, Coloma, Sutter's Mill, even a goldmine that has since become a coffee bar. Did those folks back then know that their discovery would give birth to a state faster than any other in our history? A state with a tremendous variety of riches, not just those of the element and mineral variety. I'm always amazed by California's vastness, depth of culture, and varied terrain. And even if those early entrepreneurs did have such insight, they couldn't possibly have foreseen how California would have such an impact on the rest of the nation's course of history, right up to the present where it holds so much political and economic power. Vast doesn't begin to describe California. Just a quick closing note to those of you who have been sending emails to us after reading our journal entries--thanks! It's a wonderful feeling to know that there are folks out there around the country and the globe following our twists and turns on this tour; your company and companionship is most welcome. Keep the notes coming, and feel free to tell your friends in Napa, Carson City, Eureka, Eugene, Portland and Seattle about our upcoming shows. We'd love to meet them, and it is one of the coolest things when folks show up at a show in their neighborhood because of an email or phone call from afar. Michael |
